Jonah 1:17
17 Now the Lord had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights.
Sermon: Today, we dive into one of the most remarkable stories in Scripture—the account of Jonah being swallowed by a great fish. At first glance, being swallowed by a fish sounds like a disaster, a moment of shame, or even divine punishment. But as we explore Jonah’s story, we’ll see that what seemed like a low point was actually a divine setup for God’s glory to be revealed. Jonah 1:17 shows us that even in our darkest, most confining moments, God is at work, preparing us to manifest His glory through our lives. Let’s unpack how Jonah’s experience in the fish reflects the glory of God and what it means for us today.
*Living Out the Glory in Your Swallowed Moments*
So, what does Jonah’s story mean for us today? Here are three practical ways to manifest God’s glory when life feels like it’s swallowing you, based on Jonah’s experience:
1. Trust God in the Darkness. When you feel “swallowed” by life’s challenges—whether it’s a job loss, a broken relationship, or a personal failure—trust that God is preserving you for a purpose. Pray like Jonah did, seeking God’s presence in the belly of your trial.
2. Allow God to Transform You. Use your difficult seasons as opportunities for growth. Ask God to refine your character, deepen your faith, and align you with His will, just as He did with Jonah. Let your “fish’s belly” become a place of prayer and surrender.
3. Step Out in Obedience. When God delivers you, don’t stay stuck in the past. Like Jonah, embrace the second chance to do the good works God has prepared for you. Look for opportunities to serve, love, and share Christ’s hope, knowing your obedience glorifies God.
